Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Did you know that Ol Pejeta is the only wildlife conservation area in Kenya where you can spot the big five as well as the chimpanzees?

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is located in the northern part of Nairobi, a distance covering 217km that can take 3-4 hours’ drive from Nairobi and 17km north of Lake Nakuru national park.

It was established in 1988 as a cattle ranch but in 2004, it was turned into a wildlife conservancy and now, being among the private conservation areas in Kenya situated in between the hills of Mount Kenya and Aberdare, it covers an area of 364sq km.

Ol Pejeta is home of over 10,000 large mammals such as rhinos, chimpanzees, Gravy’s zebras, Jackson hartebeests, lions, elephants among others and it’s the only reserve where you can spot the big five with humans’ closest cousins – the chimpanzees. The conservancy also harbours the rhinos and it is where the fastest growing rhino population can be found in the whole of Africa.

A safari to Ol Pejeta Conservancy rewards you with a great experience as you see the equator west of Nanyuki. Also, it is an education centre as most students learn different aspects of wildlife conservancy, culture through meeting the local people of Maasai, Turkana, and Samburu among others, ecology and cattle keeping.

Many years back, this conservancy was originally set up as a cattle ranch but it was destroyed by herds of migratory elephants which made cattle farming impossible. At this time, the conservancy has been turned into a sanctuary for great apes which generate income through tourism and complimentary enterprises that support community development.

Ol pejeta conservancy boasts the largest black rhinos and two north white rhinos, the only place to view chimpanzees (at sweet waters chimpanzee sanctuary) in the whole of Kenya, hosts some of the highest predator densities in Kenya like the lions, and higher wildlife to area ratio than any other Kenyan national park, home to the big five animals (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo) and one of the only four private game conservancies fund in Kenya. This makes it a high profile wildlife sanctuary of a significant importance to conservation.

Wildlife species that can be spotted here are black and white rhinos, elephants, predators (lions, cheetahs, leopards, serval, Jackals, spotted hyenas, African wild dog among others), hippos, giraffes, primates (olive baboons, chimpanzees, different monkeys), antelopes like impalas, eland, waterbucks and over 300 bird species including the giant ostrich.

This has led to different activities that visitors to this sanctuary can take part into, including game drives, lion tracking, game walks, birding, camel rides, education and research, chimpanzee viewing among others. Some of these activities can be done during day while others can be done at night or even both like game drives.
